Steven Defour has been a long term target of Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United, and despite interest from Liverpool to sign the Belgian play maker, sources close to the youngster claim that he would not spoil a chance to join the Manchester club in the future by talking to, or joining their arch rivals Liverpool.
The source said:
"There are many big clubs interested in Steven but he does not want to play for Liverpool at this moment."
"For the last two years Manchester United has been his number one choice and if he plays for Liverpool he is unlikely to fulfil that dream because of the rivalry between the teams.
"He would love to play under [Sir Alex] Ferguson and there may not be another chance if his next move is not to Manchester.
"But both clubs are watching him very closely and he is flattered by all the interest and takes it seriously."After Defour was on the receiving end of a serious injury, ruling him out for a long time, Sir Alex sent him a letter wishing him a speedy recover, and assuring him that Manchester United would be monitoring his progress and recovery. The player seems like a natural successor to Paul Scholes in the centre of midfield, and with Scholes not getting any younger, as well as rumours linking the veteran to either a move to a Dubai club or retirement, Ferguson is under pressure to pursue his replacement.
In October, talking to talksport the 22-year-old Standard Liege midfielder said:
"I do know that Manchester United are monitoring me - if everything goes well and I continue playing as I am, there is a better chance of me leaving than there was at the start of the season."
