Arsenal Rumours: Jagielka in, Bendtner Out?

May 2011
Phil Jagielka Phil Jagielka of Everton in action during the Barclays Premier League match between Everton and Blackburn Rovers at Goodison Park on April 16, 2011 in Liverpool, England. The latest transfer rumours surrounding Arsenal are Wenger's attempts to bring Phil Jagielka to the Emirates to add some experience and solidity to his defence which has long been called for at Arsenal. The other suggested move in the papers is with Arsenal's Danish striker, Nicklas Bendtner, who Mark Hughes will apparently attempt to bring to Fulham this summer.

Phil Jagielka is a player who Arsenal have been linked to for a while. There were reports last summer that Arsenal had made several bids for the 28 year-old Everton defender, one of which was £15 million. Wenger has maintained his interest in the former Sheffield United defender, and some sources suggest there has even been a new bid offered by Arsenal for the defender.

Arsenal have missed their rock at the back this season, Thomas Vermaelen through injury, and Wenger understands that depth and experience are key to success in a long, hard season, it is just a question of how much money he would be willing to spend, which has often been problematic, as he tends to avoid big money transfers in the fear of putting Arsenal in a difficult financial situation.

An Everton source said: "We have had major interest in Jagielka ahead of the next transfer window. But it will take a huge offer for the club to let him leave." No doubt it would take a big offer because Jagielka only signed a new 4 year deal with Everton in March of this year.

Meanwhile, the Mail reports that Bendtner wants to find a team who will offer him first team football, and with Fulham reportedly seeking two strikers to add to their squad in the summer, it looks a good match for both parties. Fulham had a £5 million bid for the 23 year-old turned down in January of this year, with Arsenal looking for Fulham to match their £6.5 million valuation of the striker who has scored 2 League goals in 15 games this season.

Bendtner, who spent a season on loan at Birmingham in the past is apparently "open to offers", with Everton and Blackburn also interested in his signature, though it seems highly unlikely that a confident player with his ambition would want to transfer to sides battling relegation.

Save our Ramsey

May 2011
Aaron Ramsey’s accomplished display in central midfield against the League leaders and the Champions League finalists prove that we have a real jewel in our crown, a type of player that could be the heartbeat of our club for the next decade.

Cardiff City fans still hail Aaron as one of their best Academy product of the past few decades.

It is good to remember that Alex Ferguson was absolutely furious that Manchester United were beaten to his signature in summer 2008. Remember back in 2008 , Manchester United had won the Premier League back-to-back again and were the current European champions.

Ramsey getting the winner against them was sweet justice for the pain he has suffered in the past year.

After conquering the team he nearly joined, Ramsey is now in line to face his aggressors this week end.

Stoke have behaved themselves appallingly since Shawcross broke the poor young Welshman's leg in several places last year.

Stoke were ever so eager to portray themselves as the "victims" of this incident. With Shawcross and Pulis taunting the Arsenal manager, the club and the fans at every opportunity, and most of the downmarket media like talkSport or the Daily Star even calling for Arsenal to apologise to poor honest Shawcross, we are bound to receive a very hostile welcome this week end.

Expect Ramsey’s every touch to be booed (because that is the level of their fans) and expect a number of meaty challenges too (because that is their honest style of play).

With that in mind, can we really risk the Welsh captain against those rugged aggressors pumped up by the Muppet with the Cap?

I don’t think Ramsey is the kind of lad who cannot hold his own. We have seen against Man U that he is more than able in central midfield.

It is not that I don’t trust Ramsey. It is just that I don't trust Pulis and Co.

Is it not an option to put Eboue in midfield in order to protect young Ramsey? Ramsey will get the next two games and plenty of action next year anyway.

His injury was so traumatising that he genuinely needs his career to kick off from now. Not brutally halted again by a bunch of Neanderthals out to get him.

I am pretty sure Eboue can provide some muscle in midfield. Just a shame that Diaby and Fabregas are both ruled out.

And anyway where the hell is Denilson?

Ayew "Delighted" & "Speechless" At United Interest

May 2011
Andre Ayew Darren Fletcher of Manchester United challenges Andre Ayew of Marseille during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg match between Marseille and Manchester United at the Stade Velodrome on February 23, 2011 in Marseille, France. While some players feel transfer rumours are an irritating distraction which can damage their on-field performances, Andre Ayew, the Marseille winger/striker has told of how "fantastic" it is to see his name linked to big clubs in newspapers. Manchester United and Barcelona - the two 2011 Champions League finalists have been said to be following the 21 year-old, and the Ghanian did not attempt to hide his amazement:
"It is fantastic to hear these stories, even if it's just through newspapers."
"I am delighted to be linked with two powerhouses of world football. It means I have improved.
"I have not got a favourite, I am just speechless!"
"It would be a dream to join one of them, but I am living the dream here with Marseille as well and also looking forward to a strong finish to the season."
After an impressive World Cup for Ghana, Ayew has had a very good season with his club, Marseille, scoring 10 goals and assisting 2 in the French Ligue 1. He was unable to grab a goal against Manchester United however, when he played against them for Marseille in this years Champions League, with a Javier Hernandez double sealing a United victory in that tie.

Despite his understandable enthusiasm to being linked with two of the best teams in Europe, he was obliged to emphasise his love of playing where he is now, at Marseille, describing it as a "dream":
"Do not forget last season, I was playing at Arles Avignon in the second division."
"The World Cup has made me realise my potential. It is a dream to play for Marseille and I love every minute of it."
Manchester United are not said to have made a move for the player, but Barcelona are reported to be preparing an £8 million bid for the versatile winger. Below you can see some highlights of Andre Ayew:

Rodwell: Interest Flattering But Concentration With Everton

May 2011
Jack Rodwell Jack Rodwell of Everton in action during the Barclays Premier League match between Everton and Blackburn Rovers at Goodison Park on April 16, 2011 in Liverpool, England.Jack Rodwell, the young Everton midfielder, who has been linked to several top sides in the past including Manchester United and Arsenal has admitted the flattery of any possible United interest in acquiring him while highlighting the importance of loyalty, and concentrating on his duties at his own club.

The 20 year-old has impressed in recent years, and has emerged as a very bright English prospect at Everton, so understandably, the defensive midfielder has been attracting attention. However, Rodwell, who has played 23 times for Everton this season, the club he supported as a child, is emphasising the importance for him to keep his feet on the ground, and stay focused on football at Goodison Park.
"You can't really pay that [the transfer rumours] any attention, you can't let off-the-field antics affect you on the pitch so you just have to have to concentrate on your own game."
Rodwell denied that it was difficult to ignore the speculation surrounding his future:
"No not at all. As long as you have got the right people around, which I have, it is easy to put to the back of your mind.
"Obviously it's flattering, but like I said I just put it to the back of my mind and I am playing for Everton Football Club and I will always give 100 per cent for them.
"I am an Everton football and I enjoy playing for Everton so I am happy to do that."
He is certainly a talented footballer - strong, disciplined and a good passer of the ball, and with quality comes demand. He will certainly be swayed by interest, despite his denials, as all players want to be successful and win trophies with their clubs, and he has a better chance of achieving that with Arsenal or Manchester United. Everton will do well to keep him, but at the moment, his commitment is admirable.

Latest on Stekelenburg

May 2011
Maarten Stekelenburg AFC Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg looks on during the UEFA Champions League Group G match between AFC Ajax and AJ Auxerre at the Amsterdam ArenA on October 19, 2010 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Maarten Stekelenburg is just one of many goalkeepers who have been linked to Manchester United and Arsenal this season, with Ferguson still looking for his Edwin van der sar replacement, and Wenger apparently keen to find a strong, solid, experienced 'keeper for Arsenal. Ron Jansen, the Ajax player' agent however confirmed that there have been no bids for his client.
"There's nothing going on at the moment.
"There hasn't been any contact with Italian teams or with other foreign teams. With no team at all. Whether he prefers to move to a foreign league? I can't confirm anything at the moment."
"There's still the possibility that he'll sign a contract extension with Ajax, too."
David De Gea is still a possibility for United, though a transfer fee for the young Atheltico prospect would be significantly larger than that of Stekelenburg, which is perhaps why Arsenal are linked so prominently with the 28 year-old.

It seems far more likely that Stekelenburg will leave for Arsenal than to United, as the player has already effectively admitted that if Arsenal make a move, he will leave Ajax for them:
"If Arsenal make an offer, I will leave Holland."
Much depends on Arsene Wenger's eagerness to pay money for a new goalkeeper, and with various other sides such as Juventus circling Stekelenburg, there will be fierce competition come the summer. If the Dutchman dies decide to leave for Arsenal, it leaves United still hunting for a goalkeeper. Manuel Neuer is off the list, with him apparently adamant about joining Bayern Munich, while David De Gea is still very much undecided about his future, as he is reluctant to leave his boyhood club as he is settled nicely in Madrid.

De Gea has been told to "renew or leave" Athletico, and, as was reported on DBSFootball in April, United's back-up plan to De Gea is the Sporting Lisbon 23 year-old goalkeeper, Rui Patricio who has been watched by United's goalkeeping coach, Eric Steele.

"Second-String" United Were First Class

May 2011
Alex Ferguson Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson celebrates at the end of the UEFA Champions League Semi Final second leg match between Manchester United and Schalke at Old Trafford on May 4, 2011 in Manchester, England.Sir Alex Ferguson may have sent out a "second-string" team against Schalke on Wednesday night, but it was nothing less than a first-class performance in front of a delighted 70,000 at Old Trafford. The United boss admitted to having second, third and fourth thoughts about the risky decision to play some players whom wouldn't usually start while resting the big guns such as Rooney, Hernandez and Vidic, but in the end, the risk paid off emphatically.

Darron Gibson, who has been the subject of huge criticism from some sections of Manchester United support, had a very impressive game with both an assist and a goal to his name. The opener was huge credit to him, feeding through Antonio Valencia, ruthlessly cutting through the Schalke defence with a pin-point pass, which some even light-heartedly likened to Andres Iniesta's quality. Valencia was one one one with Neuer, and calmly struck it past the German to lift the nerves murmuring around Old Trafford.

The second goal, was quite ironic considering Manuel Neuer's outstanding performance in the first leg, as he spilled a classic Gibson rocket into his own net, and it was at that point when Schalke, if they hadn't already, realised their Champions League dream was well and truly over. Neuer, their top performer had made a bad mistake, and that only spelled worse to come for the German side.

A consolation they did muster through Jurado, who no doubt upset Edwin van der sar by ruining his clean sheet, but it was too little too late for Schalke, who gave their fans at least something to cheer about.

Anderson then grabbed an unlikely double in the second half to seal a perfect Champions League semi-final tie, and book a place in the Champions League final with Barcelona at Wembley. It is an exciting prospect, and a game that will hopefully not be marred by the disgraceful antics that Barcelona have showcased in their far from perfect semi-final tie with Madrid.

Berbatov was his usual self; calm, drifting, and at one point showed off his outstanding and astonishingly abnormal ball control, holding off about five players and then unfortunately miscuing the cross. Michael Owen came off the bench to create a wonderful chance for himself, cutting inside on his right foot from the left and smash one towards the goal, and if it wasn't for a firm Neuer hand to stop it, the former Liverpool star would have been wheeling away in delight. That big goal he has promised is still being waited for, and he has four vital games left to do it in. Chelsea this week-end would be a good start.

Nevertheless, United have given Barcelona something to think about, with an emphatic win with their second team, having the likes of Rooney, Ferdinand and the rest watching from the stands. Schalke did not prove to be the most challenging of opposition by any means, but United did not do it the hard way like has been done before, but defeated them in style, and with apparent ease, both home and away with no blips.

No player will miss the final due to suspension which is a huge bonus, and we must hope that no-one suffers an injury in the lead up to the huge game later this month.

Nasri: What I like about Rooney

May 2011
Wayne Rooney Referee Chris Foy shows a yellow card to Wayne Rooney of Manchester United as he is booked during the Barclays Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on May 1, 2011 in London, England.
Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri was bursting full of praise for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney in a recent interview. The Frenchman, who is currently top of the DBS Football poll as to who your player of the season is, was speaking to the News of The World, when he said that United's star striker is a "nightmare for a defence", and "the archetype of the modern striker".

"What impresses the most about [Wayne Rooney] is his first touch, his ball control. This gives him the ability to beat a man or turn towards where the play is."
"He likes running from deep and can do a lot of damage. He’s also their first defender, which is a nightmare for a defence. When he loses the ball he’s prepared to sprint 40 meters to win it back."
"And then he either wins it back or fouls you, so you know you have to get rid of it, because he gives a dig."
"The amazing overhead kick he scored against Manchester City underlines all his qualities."
"Timing, risk-taking, a good eye, and technique. He has it all. He is the archetype of the modern striker."
Nasri's praise for Rooney simply highlights how well the Englishman has turned his season around from crushing off-field allegations leading to poor form to getting back into his groove. He is once again threatening the best of defences with his creative, cutting passing and movement just behind Chicharito at the head of the team. Nasri was able to help Arsenal to victory over United last week, but the Red Devil's remain in the driving seat, with a crucial game against Chelsea this week end.

Nasri and Arsenal will surely be watching the game in anticipation with hope for their frail title bid, whilst admiring the qualities of Rooney in the United side.
