No Leaders? Arsenal captains tell a different story

The media is always talking about the lack of leaders in this Arsenal team and how no one can take responsibility here when things go wrong.

Ramsey´s promotion as a full-time Wales captain has shown how lazy this argument actually is. There is a big difference between constructive criticism and plain winding-up, which is what large sections of the media do when it comes to Arsenal.

Being an international captain means a lot of responsibilities, being the centre of attention at press conferences and of course leading a group of players who are already at various leading clubs in global football.

We currently have five permanent international captains and that is not including our current club captain Cesc Fabregas:

Thomas Vermaelen – Captain of Belgium
Andrei Arshavin  – Captain of Russia
Aaron Ramsey – Captain of Wales
Marouane Chamakh – Captain of Morocco
Tomas Rosicky– Captain of Czech Republic

We also have two alternate captains – Samir Nasri captained France yesterday and Robin van Persie is sometimes leading the Netherlands.

Future Captains?

I also think we have a number of other players who could go on and captain their international team in the future. For example, Cesc Fabregas could become a future captain of Spain. Casillas is 30 and the other senior players like Alonso, Xabi, Iniesta and Puyol are also around the 30-mark.

As for England, there will also be a problem with the captaincy within the next few years when Ferdinand, Terry and Lampard all become too old for international football. The one outstanding youngster for the next generation is at Arsenal and we have seen Jack Wilshere already displaying growing leadership skills in recent games against Birmingham, Barcelona or West Brom.

POLL RESULT: 64% of you think Arsenal can win the league. However, the optimisim has dwindled after the WBA draw as prior to it, 82% thought we will finish first.
