Arsene Wenger has issued his traditional cut and paste statement for every transfer window by saying that he will only buy if he find players who are better than the ones he already have.
This is fair enough of course - no one is telling him to buy players of lesser ability than the ones currently on board.
But I seem to have heard this from Arsene for perhaps about a decade now.
I understand that he cannot unsettle his squad by publicly saying that he wants to buy players but the fear I have is that Arsene believes in what he is saying and that he feels that there is no real point in buying.
Well I hope he does not make the same mistakes of 2008 and 2010. Those two years, we were flying high in the league. The squad needed just a little fine-tuning but Wenger refused to do it in the transfer window. We bought Campbell last season and the latter did exceptionally well for his age. But you cannot deny that the Sylvestre-Campbell partnership were past it and cost us a good number of points in the title race.
We have a superb team this season again and the players are maturing fast. A lot of these players are winners and have won trophies before. Fabregas is a World Cup Winner and Nasri and Chamakh for example have both won the league in their countries. A lot of these players are ready for their first trophies with Arsenal.
But it does not mean that you cannot strengthen the squad. Man City, Chelsea and Man U will not stand still and injuries and suspensions play their part too. There is that big central defender out there that will improve the defence. Mertesacker, Jagielka or Cahill to name a few do exist but big players do not come cheap.
Wenger cannot miss the opportunity this transfer window and should get his chequebook out - it could well win us the league.
